EPR CERTIFICATION

EPR CERTIFICATION

EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) environment policy approach initiated by the Government of India that holds the producers, manufacturers, importers, and brand owners who are responsible for the entire lifecycle of the product they produce, which particularly include the end-of-life stage of the product. This concept introduced by the Government of India majorly aims to reduce the environmental impact of products by ensuring that the producer of the particular product take the responsibility for the collection, recycling, and the proper disposal of their products after consumer have finished using their product and the product has reached the end-of-life stage.

ewaste

E-waste (Electronic waste) contains various hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, these materials can be harmful to the environment and human health if they are not properly disposed of. Producers are required to establish systems for the collection, recycling, and safe disposal of electronic products they produce at the end of their life cycle or the consumer is done using it. In India, the E-Waste Management Rules, 2016, mandate producers to ensure that e-waste is collected and processed in authorized facilities so that the environment can be affected as less as possible. This promotes the recycling of valuable materials like metals and reduces the improper disposal of hazardous components into the environment.

Batteries, particularly those which containing heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury, pose significant environmental risks if not properly managed and managing them is a very crucial task as the risk of disposing them is high. Producers are responsible for the collection and recycling of used batteries, ensuring that harmful substances do not leach into the environment. The Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001, in India, require manufacturers to establish systems for collecting and recycling used batteries so that they can be properly managed and can be disposed of properly without harming the environment. This helps in recovering valuable metals and reduces the environmental hazards associated with improper disposal of the used and end-of-life batteries.

Used tyres are difficult to dispose of due to their durability and can cause environmental problems if burned or dumped in landfills as burning them leads to the release of various harmful gasses into the air. Producers are required to manage the collection, recycling, or proper disposal of used tyres. This includes encouraging the use of recycled rubber and promoting eco-friendly alternatives like retreading. India is in the process of establishing specific regulations for tyre management under EPR so that the waste generated by the tyres can be reduced at a significant amount. This reduces the environmental impact of tyre waste and encourages the use of recycled materials in new products.

oil waste

Used oil, especially from industries and vehicles, can contaminate soil and water if not properly handled all those hazardous components in the oil can cause various health problem if they enter the soil. Producers and users of oil are required to ensure that used oil is collected and processed for reuse or safe disposal. In India, the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016, regulate the collection, storage, and recycling of used oil. This promotes the safe handling of hazardous waste, reduces pollution, and supports the recycling of oil for further use so that the amount of used waste oil can be managed easily.

ANNUAL COMPLIANCE

Annual compliance under the EPR Certification (Extended Producer Responsibility) involves all the producers, importers, and all the brand owners must submit a report detailing all their waste management efforts. This report usually includes the quantity of the waste collected by them, recycled, or disposed of by them, all the measures taken by them to ensure proper waste management. To make it more authenticate the companies must also submit certificates from the authorised recyclers and the waste processor as a proof of the successful compliance. In case the company fails or falls under the non-compliance can result in penalties, including fines or legal action. In India, EPR Certification (Extended Producer Responsibility) compliance, reports are typically submitted to the CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) or the SPCB (State Pollution Control Boards), depending on the regulations as per the various waste categories.
